# Detroit hero geography

Prepared 2026-10-17. This is a stylized, geographically grounded downtown model,
not a survey or a claim that futuristic flights/deliveries currently operate here.

## Coordinates and geometry

- Origin: latitude `42.332`, longitude `-83.047` (WGS84).
- Local meters: `x = (longitude + 83.047) * 111320 * cos(42.332°)`;
  `z = (42.332 - latitude) * 111320`. `y` is height above a flat local ground plane.
- Extent: longitude `-83.058` to `-83.032`, latitude `42.321` to `42.343`.
- Building rings retain actual footprints and optional courtyards (`holes`).
Coordinates are rounded to centimeters and nearly collinear points are simplified.
- Street polylines are actual centerlines. Widths are illustrative estimates, not
surveyed lane counts. Tunnel segments are omitted from the above-ground scene.
- The river polygon follows the actual Detroit bank; its other boundaries are the
artificial scene crop. Do not treat the southern crop edge as the Windsor bank.
- The most recent Hudson's Detroit footprints replace the older combined parcel.
The building's stepped sections are separate, overlapping solids, not separate towers.
- One Detroit Center, Comerica Tower, and Ally Detroit Center name the same building.

### Downtown buildings and streets

Retrieved **2026-10-17**, directly from two bounded OpenStreetMap API extracts:

- [Western downtown extract](https://api.openstreetmap.org/api/0.6/map?bbox=-83.058,42.325,-83.045,42.343)
- [Eastern downtown extract](https://api.openstreetmap.org/api/0.6/map?bbox=-83.045,42.325,-83.032,42.343)
- Complete boundary relations [8644491](https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/8644491)
  and [11111132](https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/11111132) resolve members
  extending beyond those bounded extracts.

The downtown collection contains **709 building/building-part footprints** and
**1,326 road/carriageway/service-road/pedestrian/cycleway centerlines**. Feature
records retain OSM identifiers. Building multipolygon outer rings and courtyard
holes are assembled from their member ways. Ordinary building envelopes use 55
explicit mapped heights, 308 mapped story counts converted at an illustrative
3.7 m/story, and 318 clearly labeled two-story fallbacks where height is unmapped.
Twenty named skyline buildings retain documented architectural-height overrides;
eight Hudson's Detroit parts retain their mapped stepped composition. This is not
a survey of roof heights or building interiors.

Building rings are simplified at approximately 0.35 m; downtown road lines at
0.5 m. Coordinates are projected and rounded to centimeters. Streets are clipped
to the scene bounds. Widths use mapped width/lanes where available, otherwise
explicit illustrative class-based estimates. Divided streets retain separate
carriageways rather than applying a full two-way road width twice. Tunnels,
indoor corridors, bridges, parking aisles and driveways are omitted from this
core ground-level road layer. The MacArthur Bridge is modeled separately.

All 21 named landmark identities remain. Their anchors now follow OSM geometry:
most moved less than 7 m from the earlier preview; Ford Field and Book Cadillac
moved approximately 19 m. The municipal landmark now anchors the separately
mapped courts tower rather than a combined two-tower footprint (approximately
51 m difference). The administration tower remains a separate mapped building.
Facade colors, night lighting, decorative crowns, roof equipment and foliage are
artistic interpretations, not GIS attributes or live operating information.

## Expanded Detroit–Windsor / Belle Isle geography (2026-10-17)

`region` extends the downtown core. Its existing OSM records are unchanged by the
downtown-source replacement. The
renderer now uses **both real riverbanks**, rather than interpreting the legacy
`river` crop edge as Canada. The full [Detroit River OSM relation 5678328](https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/5678328)
was assembled from connected outer ways; island inner rings remain holes in the
water mesh. Coordinates use the same local-meter projection above. Simplification
is approximately 4 m on the river and 3 m on Belle Isle's outline.

- Belle Isle: 159-vertex main island outline, 16 mapped inland water bodies,
70 mapped building footprints, 12 small mapped woodland patches, plus actual road/service-road/park-path geometry.
  Its footprint bounds are x 3454.8–7731.53 m, z -2204.04–-109.14 m.
- Windsor: 299 OSM building/building-part footprints, including the different
Caesars Forum and Augustus towers; 13 park outlines. The combined regional
street/path dataset contains 655 ways. Building levels are converted using an
illustrative 3.7 m/story when no mapped height exists; missing levels use 2
stories. Facades, roof equipment and plantings are representative, not a survey.
- Caesars Augustus: 111 m / 27 floors, checked against the
[Council on Vertical Urbanism / Skyscraper Center](https://www.skyscrapercenter.com/building/caesars-windsor-augustus-tower/10547).
Forum is modeled at approximately 83 m, consistent with the
  [same council's Windsor inventory](https://www.skyscrapercenter.com/city/windsor).
- [MacArthur Bridge deck way 800430182](https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/800430182):
opposing deck-cap midpoints project to mainland `[3818.24, -1485.94]` and island
  `[4157.28, -874.59]`. Centerline distance 699.069 m; yaw 0.5063496 radians.
This is the Belle Isle access bridge, **not** a Canada border crossing.
The GLB's arch/deck elevations are architectural approximations; its 50 m
approach ramps go beyond those cap points. No ground-level regional road is
drawn across the elevated bridge span.
- The [Michigan DNR Belle Isle mobility study](https://www.michigan.gov/dnr/-/media/Project/Websites/dnr/Documents/PRD/BI-archive/Belle-multimodal/BelleIsleMobilityStudy2024-Ch2-Existing-Conditions.pdf)
verifies bridge/park connections and pedestrian-light character. The
  [DNR park page](https://www.michigan.gov/recsearch/parks/belleisle) identifies
Belle Isle as an island park, not part of Windsor.
- [City of Windsor riverfront documentation](https://www.citywindsor.ca/residents/parks-and-forestry/trails/Riverfront)
informs the continuous parkland/promenade character. Shore-side green strips,
tree placements and light-pool positions are artistic approximations.
- RenCen low podium, Wintergarden and service-core footprints come from OSM
  building relation [17928873](https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/17928873),
  including round-roof Wintergarden part [419447156](https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/419447156).
Its barrel-vault structure follows the project's structural contractor,
  [Novum Structures](https://novumstructures.com/novum_projects/gm-hq-the-wintergarden/),
  and [Hines' renovation description](https://www.hines.com/properties/gm-renaissance-center-detroit).

OSM API extracts were requested only for bounded downtown/Windsor/bridge/island
areas and the named river relation. All derived OSM features remain © OpenStreetMap
contributors, ODbL; keep visible attribution. Distant unnamed background masses
outside the mapped core/Canadian center remain explicitly illustrative. No border,
transport, traffic-rule or navigational accuracy is promised.
